Preparing
For A Safe & Convenient Flight
Passengers should arrive at the airport two hours in advance
of departure and more if traveling out-of-the USA. The following
tips and recommendations will help you move more quickly through
the security processes. Most of this information can be found
at the Transportation Security Administration website along with greater detail.
Standards have been created for screening procedures. Therefore
expect the same procedures at each of the
USA airports your visit.
General Travel Tips
• Airport security safety regulations prohibit vehicles
waiting for passengers at curbside. Give the passenger ample
time to exit the aircraft, walk to baggage claim and pickup
bags before expecting them at curbside. Otherwise you may
find yourself circling the airport awaiting your passenger
arrival. If you live nearby the airport, have the passenger
call upon exit of the aircraft. It’s always wise to
call the airline to make sure the expected flight will be
on time.
• Only ticketed passengers are allowed past security
checkpoints. If you are escorting children or persons with
disabilities, contact your airline
for assistance and specific guidelines.
• Never leave bags unattended and never carry anything
onboard the airplane for a stranger.
• Carry government-issued photo identification, passports
and visas on your person.
• Individual airlines have varying restrictions on
sizes of luggage and carryon bags. Call the airlines for specific
size limitations and number of bag limits.
• DO NOT pack or carry prohibited items to the airport.

• Place valuables including jewelry, cash, cameras
and electronic items in carryon baggage only. The airlines
are not responsible for the loss of such items. Keep carryon
bags tightly under your control at all times.
• Tape your business card to the bottom of laptop computers
and larger items. Place a luggage tag with your name, address
and phone number on all bags.
• Avoid wearing shoes, clothing, jewelry and other
times that contain metal that could setoff the metal detectors.
• Avoid carrying wrapped gifts. It’s best to
ship gifts or wrap them after going through security checkpoints.
Gifts could be unwrapped by ISA staff for security checks.
• Checked baggage screening equipment could damage
photographic film. Keep it with your inside carryon baggage.
• Declare firearms and ammunition to your airline and
place it in checked baggage. Do not pack loaded firearms.
Keep ammunition separated.
• If you have a medical condition that requires you
to carry a syringe or needle in your carryon, you must also
have the corresponding medication clearly identified with
its pharmaceutical label. If you have a medical implant that
could trigger a metal detector, bring evidence verifying your
medical condition.
• Place any items that could be considered a weapon
such as knives, scissors, crochet needles, screwdrivers, tools
and even cigarette lighters inside checked baggage.
Security Inspection Screening
• Do not joke about security measures and processes.
It could get you arrested.
• Laptop computers and other electronic equipment must
be removed from their carrying cases before going through
the x-ray machines.
• Place excess loose change and metal object inside
your carry-on bag.
• Remove overcoats and jackets
• All passengers are subject to random searchers including
carryons. Baggage may be tested for traces of explosives and
explosive material.
Following are PDF Lists of Permitted and Prohibited Items.
Study the lists carefully. Prohibited items may not be brought
to the security checkpoints without prior authorization. You
could be criminally and civilly prosecuted for having prohibited
items, even accidentally. Note that some items may be prohibited
both within carryon and checked baggage but some items can
be placed within checked baggage. If you have any doubt, check
with your airline before proceeding to the airport.
